C. C. W H I T EI have been drawing and painting (and spinning, weaving and knitting, designing houses and kitchens, decorating pottery, and making marks in general) since I was five, when my first kindergarten teacher wrote on my report card, "Whenever we have free time, Cynthia loves to sit by herself and draw and paint." I have always been stimulated by the work of other artists, but only in the past ten years have I allowed myself to be seriously devoted to my own art. My work is deeply intuitive, reflecting my own hopes, fears, and deepest feelings. I often describe my images as "Internal Landscapes," or "Weather Reports from the Interior." I use dreams, ritual, visions, poetry, prayers, and quotations for inspiration. Making art provides me with energy, and a spiritual connection to the natural world. I am most truly and deeply present when I'm working and playing in my studio. My husband, David, and I live a "homesteading way of life," in Sandwich, New Hampshire. We are building our life here literally from the ground up, starting with fieldstone foundations for our barn and house. We keep a large garden and live without electricity, trying to live a little more "lightly on the land." I have a beautiful studio with north light, which is a dream come true for me.
