B R E T O N M O R S EBreton Morse first exhibited at Patricia Carega Gallery in 1987 in Washington, DC. His humorous paintings filled with mirth, wit and irony sold out. Morse's work is about life's "foibles." The viewer first smiles, then laughs, and then realizes that he is looking at the work of a serious artist.
Morse lives and works in Florida. He was born in Washington DC, graduated from the University of Virginia and later from the Rhode Island School of Design. Morse began his career as an abstract painter in New York. Motherwell, Franz Kline and Rauschenberg were becoming big names. He returned to Washington DC as the Washington Color School was controlling the art scene. Tired of trying to be a part of "artistic trends," Morse returned to figurative painting. No longer able to suppress his humor, Morse was able to combine his two greatest talents. Writer, Fran Nuelle, best sums up Morse's work: "Now he knows he can be both 'the serious painter that I know I am' and the humorist who happens to be the one who wields the brush."
